ReactOS on real hardware: NVIDIA GFX 3450 256MB

For Summer 2017, the link https://reactos.org/wiki/Supported_Hardware/Video_cards was recently updated. Someone did a test for GPU = NVIDIA Geforce 6600. Test was done for ReactOS 0.4.5 but with a workaround to install/use native NVIDIA driver.

Reading that on Friday 13Oct2017 I took decision to try a pretty old card I have at home. GFX 3450. I was pretty surprised to see that it works using workaround for the NVDisp.nvu file.

Screenshot from Device Manager - Listed as GFX3450 using native driver
Pros
  • Once driver installed you may have better resolutions 1920x1080@60Hz and over
Cons
  • Don't expect to play some 3D games
  • This is only usefull for a standard office station
BUT it is nice and fun to have a resolution 1920x1080@60Hz

Tests for some old drivers for Quadro FX 3450

After some researchs on the Web I found the link for archived drivers for quadro : http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html. I tried a couple of drivers. Below are the results of my tests

DriverResults
169.06
  • Installation without any problem. Workaround for NVDisp.nvu file is useless
  • BSOD while rebooting the PC -- "Restart" option
  • No issue for "control panel"
181.20
  • Installation without any problem. Workaround for NVDisp.nvu file is useless
  • Issue for control panel: Panel will not appear if you click on "control panel"
182.65
  • Issue for control panel: Panel will not appear if you click on "control panel"
Drivers are far from perfect. That being said, I will recommend either driver 162.65 or 169.06

Update compiler suite from gcc-4.9 to gcc-6 on Ubuntu 14.10.

My Linux station is based on Ubuntu 14.10 -- yeah I know this is pretty old --. All graphical tools (Mesa, LLVM, RadeonSI) and the Linux kernel are maintained and I try to keep theom up-to-date. However I would like to upgrade my gcc version.

I am currently testing information shared at https://gist.github.com/application2000/73fd6f4bf1be6600a2cf9f56315a2d91

Ok let see if it works
apt-get update && sudo apt-get install build-essential software-properties-common -y
add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test -y
apt-get update
apt-get install gcc-snapshot -y
apt-get update
Now it failed with this
root@amdgaming:~# apt-get install gcc-6 g++-6 -y
Lecture des listes de paquets... Fait
Construction de l'arbre des dépendances
Lecture des informations d'état... Fait
E: Impossible de trouver le paquet gcc-6
E: Impossible de trouver le paquet g++-6
E: Impossible de trouver de paquet correspondant à l'expression rationnelle « g++-6 »
After googling on "install gcc-6 ubuntu" let's try this one http://juniway.blogspot.fr/2015/06/install-gcc510-on-ubuntu-1204build-from.html
apt-get install libgmp-dev libmpfr-dev libmpc-dev libc6-dev
Time to download sources
cd /opt/Sources
wget https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gcc/gcc-6.2.0/gcc-6.2.0.tar.bz2
Try configure, build and install
./configure --prefix=/opt/gcc-6.2.0 --disable-checking --enable-languages=c,c++,objc --disable-multilib --with-system-zlib
make -j4
make install

Notice: for commands above I took decision to install it in /opt/gcc-6.2.0. I don't want to break compiler gcc-4.9 suite installed on my own system. This way gcc-4.9 is kept safe on my system

Check installed version

root@amdgaming:/opt/Sources/gcc-6.2.0# /opt/gcc-6.2.0/bin/gcc -v
Utilisation des specs internes.
COLLECT_GCC=/opt/gcc-6.2.0/bin/gcc
COLLECT_LTO_WRAPPER=/opt/gcc-6.2.0/libexec/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/6.2.0/lto-wrapper
Cible : i686-pc-linux-gnu
Configuré avec: ./configure --prefix=/opt/gcc-6.2.0 --disable-checking --enable-languages=c,c++,objc --disable-multilib --with-system-zlib
Modèle de thread: posix
gcc version 6.2.0 (GCC)
root@amdgaming:/opt/Sources/gcc-6.2.0# /opt/gcc-6.2.0/bin/gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 6.2.0

[LinuxGaming] Alien Quest Eve - Demo v0.11 | Wine-Staging 2.18 | Gallium Nine

This is a demo about this pretty sexy cool game.

  • This game should be released -- fingers crossed -- for Winter 2017.
  • BTW I recently bought a PC receiver for my xbox360 wireless controller. The receiver works out-of-the-box. That was the occasion to test it!
  • In order to play/install this game then please click on the link provided in subsection Documentation: How to install/play the game

Video (Youtube)

There is an interesting feature to publish video on Youtube. Since it is a sexy game than you can either censor or uncensor the game. I used the "censor" option in video below.
