"Hounds - The Last Hope" on Linux | Gallium Nine | Wine-Staging 1.9.2

This game works pretty well with Gallium Nine.

Videos (Youtube)

Below are two videos

Video 1 - Tutorial

Video 2 - Mode Coop

How to install this game

Below are the instructions required to play this game on Linux

1. Preresuisites: Ulimit - Increase parameters for this game.

This game used a lot of files. You have to increase the number of files opened/used by your current Linux username by adding these lines below to /etc/security/limits.conf
david 		soft 	nofile 		8192
david 		hard 	nofile 		16384
In my case david is my username on my PC. So replace david by yours.

Notice: For the peace of mind I updated one more parameter to fs.file-max by adding this line to /etc/sysctl.conf. Here is the line I added

fs.file-max = 1000000
Then reboot the PC.

2. Steam and Fake installation packages

  • As usual set up a new WINEPREFIX. In my case my configuration file Hounds_The_Last_Hope.cfg for this game will be
    export WINEPREFIX=/opt/Builds/wine/data/Hounds_The_Last_Hope
    export PATH=/opt/gstreamer/1.6.3/bin:/opt/wine/apps/Hounds_The_Last_Hope/bin/:$PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/gstreamer/1.6.3/lib/:/opt/gstreamer/1.6.3/lib/gstreamer-1.0/:/opt/wine/apps/Hounds_The_Last_Hope/lib:/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/:/usr/local/lib/:/usr/lib

    ################################
    # Mesa3D Environment Variables #
    ################################
    #
    # Note: To get information refer to http://www.mesa3d.org/envvars.html
    #
    #export R600_DEBUG="hyperz"
    #export R600_DEBUG="hyperz,sb"
    #export R600_DEBUG=nosb,nohyperz,no2d,notiling,nodma,nocpdma,switch_on_eop
    export GALLIUM_HUD=fps
    export MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE="4.1COMPAT"
    export vblank_mode=0
    export force_s3tc_enable=true
    ######################################
    # Wine-Staging Environment Variables #
    ######################################
    #
    # Note: To get information refer to https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/wiki/Environment-Variables
    #
    export STAGING_SHARED_MEMORY=1
    export STAGING_WRITECOPY=1

    Once sourced by doing
    source Hounds_The_Last_Hope.cfg
    then we can go ahead... Initialize the new WINEPREFIX by running winecfg etc...
  • Install the packages using winetricks
    winetricks -q vcrun2010 dotnet40 d3dcompiler_43 d3dx9_42

    Those packages installed through winetricks will be installed by Steam. We will make Steam believe that those packages are already installed by loading a registry file. This way Steam will not try to install those packages

    To do so generate a temporary file Hounds_The_Last_Hope.reg. Its content will be

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\CommonRedist\vcredist\2010]
    "x86"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010]
    "dxsetup"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\CommonRedist\.NET\4.0]
    "4.0"=dword:00000001

  • Now load this registry file
    regedit Hounds_The_Last_Hope.reg
  • Install Steam
    winetricks --no-isolate steam
  • Log into your Steam account, buy the game, install it. Play and enjoy!

Tips to know - Keyboard mapping (French users) and disable "[Alt]+[F2]" Shortcut on LXDE

Disable [Alt]+[F2] Shortcut on LXDE

I use LXDE. This m** f** shortcut can break your game while you are playing. If this shortcut is not disabled then once both keys pressed then a new open will opened prompting you to execute a command. To get rid of this shortcut
  • Edit this file ~/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml
    vim ~/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml
  • Comment out lines below
    <keybind key="A-F2">
          <action name="Execute">
              <command>lxpanelctl run</command>
         </action>
    </keybind>

  • Once commented out then you should have

    <!--
    <keybind key="A-F2">
          <action name="Execute">
              <command>lxpanelctl run</command>
         </action>
    </keybind>
    -->

  • Reboot your system

French Keyboard

I am French. My keyboard is French (European) -- not Canadian French keyboard. There is a file for keyboard mapping "${WINEPREFIX}/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Hounds The Last Hope/Config/Profiles/keybind.ini"

I had to update this file for the following mapping

[GameKey]
key_forward=w
key_back=s
key_left=a
key_right=d
key_reload=r
key_ccs_cleave=e
key_ccs_grapple=f
key_view=.
key_clan=n
key_mail=m
key_look=,
key_activate_mouse_pointer=z
key_quick_chat=c
key_skill=k
key_option=u
key_quest=j
key_mirror=q
key_inventory=i
key_community=o
key_char_state=p
key_achievement=l
key_poptooltip=x
key_combat_state=tab
key_combat_stage_DE=TABULATOR
key_total_action=space
key_total_action_DE=LEER
key_sprint=shift
key_sprint_DE=UMSCHALT
key_crouch=alt
key_crouch_DE=STRG
key_1st_item=&
key_2st_item=eacute
key_3st_item="
key_4st_item=)
key_5st_item=(
key_6st_item=-
key_7st_item=è
key_8st_item=_
key_9st_item=ç
key_0st_item=à
key_1st_skill=f1
key_2st_skill=f2
key_3st_skill=f3
key_4st_skill=f4
key_5st_skill=f5
key_6st_skill=f6
key_7st_skill=f7
key_8st_skill=f8
key_9st_skill=f9
key_10st_skill=f10
key_11st_skill=f11
key_12st_skill=f12
key_admin=y
key_help=h
key_fresh=g
key_page_up=Page Up
key_page_down=Page Down

Switch between ' and ) keys. Since ) is not used in the game this is the key I choose so I can switch ' and ). I have to add those lines to my Hounds_The_Last_Hope.cfg file

xmodmap -e "keycode  20 = apostrophe 4 apostrophe 4 braceleft dollar braceleft"
xmodmap -e "keycode 13 = parenright degree parenright degree bracketright questiondown bracketright"

Refresh Mesa Repo with latest patches from Gallium Nine

Here we will download

  • the Official Mesa Repo
  • the Mesa Repo maintained by iXit Team
.

Notice: iXit Team Repo is the Mesa Repo patched with Gallium Nine. Sometimes it is refreshed sometimes not!. Here I will show how I extract lasted patches for Gallium Nine and how I apply those patches to Mesa Official Repo

  1. Download the latest Official Mesa Repo
    git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa Mesa-3D_$(date -I)
  2. Get the latest comment from the latest commit
    root@amdgaming:/opt/Sources/Mesa-3D_2016-01-30# git log|head -n5
    commit 438d421f8bb3f65402701628c3504c0ad04184c0
    Author: Ilia Mirkin
    Date:   Fri Jan 29 20:28:12 2016 -0500

        nvc0: avoid crashing when there are holes in vertex array bindings

  3. Download the latest iXit Repo (this one is patched with Gallium Nine!)
    git clone https://github.com/iXit/Mesa-3D.git Mesa-3D_iXit_$(date -I)
    cd Mesa-3D_iXit_$(date -I)
  4. We need to extract the latest patches for Gallium Nine. To do this we need to get the latest commit. We get it using
    root@amdgaming:/opt/Sources/Mesa-3D_iXit_2016-01-30# git log|head -n1
    commit e4ce343e5c8b85ead88717b886c8a46753b5d7c8

    Ok. So it will be e4ce343e5c8b85ead88717b886c8a46753b5d7c8
  5. Now question is how many patches have to be generated? Well try a huge number like 60 using the command first
    root@amdgaming:/opt/Sources/Mesa-3D_iXit_2016-01-30# rm -f *patch;git format-patch -60 e4ce343e5c8b85ead88717b886c8a46753b5d7c8
    0001-glsl-double-precision-values-don-t-support-interpola.patch
    0002-radeonsi-Add-option-for-SI-scheduler.patch
    0003-glsl-disallow-implicit-conversions-in-ESSL-shaders.patch
    0004-st-nine-Fix-AlphaCmpCaps.patch
    0005-st-nine-Fix-D3DPMISCCAPS_FOGANDSPECULARALPHA-support.patch
    0006-st-nine-Fix-rounding-issue-with-vs1.1-a0-reg.patch
    ...
    ...
    0057-st-nine-Add-format-checks-to-create_zs_or_rt_surface.patch
    0058-st-nine-SCRATCH-does-support-all-formats.patch
    0059-st-nine-Improve-doc-of-D3DPMISCCAPS_POSTBLENDSRGBCON.patch
    0060-st-nine-Ignore-discard-flag-when-nooverwrite-is-set.patch

  6. So it means that we will get the latest patches by removing the 3 first patches listed above. 57 = 60 - 3. So the correct command to extract Gallium Nine patches will be
    rm -f *patch;git format-patch -57 e4ce343e5c8b85ead88717b886c8a46753b5d7c8
  7. So now we can get back to Mesa Official Sources and patch those sources with Gallium Nine
    cd Mesa-3D_$(date -I)
    for file in $(ls /opt/Sources/Mesa-3D_iXit_2016-01-30/*patch);do patch -p1 < $file;done
    and we will get
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/adapter9.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/adapter9.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/nine_shader.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/nine_shader.c
    ...
    ...
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/texture9.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/volumetexture9.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/adapter9.c
    patching file src/gallium/state_trackers/nine/nine_pipe.h

  8. Now we can build Mesa
