Rage is known to be playable (perfectly ?) on Linux using Wine 1.3 and 1.4. Since I am keen on testing games on Linux using Xen VGA Passthroug, a couple weeks ago, I decided to begin my test using Crysis 2. This week-end, let's have a try for Rage. While I was doing a few search for playing Rage using Wine from http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24512, it was noticed that the game is playable using CUDA for accelerating textures.

Transcoding option (CUDA/GPU) available from main Video settings.
AS MENTIONNED IN THE PREVIOUS LINK, DON'T FORGET TO SWITCH THIS OPTION TO OFF WHEN YOU STOP TO PLAY.

Here are my personal detailed informations for installation.

Install Cuda Toolkit 4.0.17 (32 Bits)

You need to use this specific CUDA version. Doesn't work for 4.1

• Go to http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-40. Then click for "CUDA Toolkit for Ubuntu Linux 10.10 (32 bits)"
• Or direct downloadhttp://www.nvidia.com/object/thankyou.html?url=/compute/cuda/4_0/toolkit/cudatoolkit_4.0.17_linux_32_ubuntu10.10.run
• Install as root

  sh cudatoolkit_4.0.17_linux_32_ubuntu10.10.run

• echo /usr/local/cuda/lib > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/cuda-32bits.conf
  ldconfig
  

Wine Cuda

• Download the sources

  git clone https://github.com/lexa2/wine-cuda.git
  

• Since I am using wine 1.4 compiled for 32 bits on Ubuntu 64 bits, I have to modify the Makefile

  1. cd wine-cuda/cudart/

  2. Edit the Makefile using vim and on line 31, add -m32. You should have

     29: cudart_dll_LDFLAGS    = -shared \
     30:                         $(cudart_dll_MODULE:%=%.spec) \
     31:                         -mno-cygwin -m32
     

  3. Compil

     CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/include/wine/" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib/wine/" make clean all

• In your Rage installation directory, backup cudart32_40_17.dll

  cd /home/david/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Bethesda\ Softworks/Rage/
  mv cudart32_40_17.dll cudart32_40_17.dll_orig

• Copy cudart32_40_17.dll.so to the required directory on $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/window/system32 and create a symbolic link

  cd wine-cuda/cudart
  
  cp -vf cudart32_40_17.dll.so /home/david/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
  
  ln -s /home/david/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/cudart32_40_17.dll.so /home/david/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/cudart32_40_17.dll
  

On Video options, CUDA setting should be available (see image above).

Wine 1.4 is out. So I will be able to test it on Xen :).
